Sloe Gin

Hits 6106 | Created 2009-10-14 | Modified 2009-10-14

A 1960s sloe gin recipe. Requires 1lb sloes, 5oz sugar, 70cl Gin. Takes about 3 months. Makes 2 bottles of sloe gin from 1 bottle of gin.

Ingredients

1 lb sloes
5 oz sugar
1 bottle of gin

Method

Wash and drain sloes, remove leaves and stalks.

Prick sloes with a knife all over and place in a Kilner jar, or separate into two old gin bottles with an even amount of sloes in each.

Add sugar, pour over gin. Seal tightly, store in a cool, dark place for 6 weeks, shaking once or twice a week.

Strain and squeeze gin into another jar or bottle and leave for a couple of weeks without shaking until clear and sediment has settled.

Pour or siphon carefully into two bottles, leaving the sediment behind. Top up these bottles to within an inch of the top with boiled and cooled water.

Mix well, cork (or seal well) and store for 1 month before drinking (you can drink it sooner if xmas is too close :)

I strained my Sloe gin today and topped up with 120ml water per bottle. I have decided that I will leave them like this, rather than go with the stage 'Pour or siphon carefully into two bottles, leaving the sediment behind' - perhaps this will prove to be a mistake, we shall see in a month...
