We arrived at X's apartment block after an hour of stumbling through endless dark streets, we rang the bell and after a brief contemplative pause, X buzzed us in.
'Come up.' He said slowly.
The door of the flat was open and the room inside was dim. Dan and I stood in the doorway peering into the gloom, but James pushed passed us and walked confidently inside. We followed him into a large living room, devoid of any furniture except two tables, one in the centre of the floor and one against the outside window, which was fully open; the curtains blew around like in an old haunted house.
X appeared behind us and James introduced us. X didn't shake hands but expressed that it was pleasing to meet us all. X couldn't stand still, he was fascinating to watch. Something was always moving - his hands in a slow, snakelike way; his hips, rotating slowly; his legs would carry him left and the right as if in moonwalk. He was hypnotic. He made a short speech.
'This is your apartment. There are no rules except one. That is, do not disrespect this place. Okay?' He looked at each of us sternly.
We all mumbled and nodded agreement.
'Good, good. Tomorrow evening I will be going to the Eastern Seas for a week. You are welcome to stay here while I am gone. James, here are the keys.' He handed a set of keys to James. 'When you leave, leave the keys downstairs in the shop below, they are my friends.'
He regarded us and our packs. 'Make yourselves at home.' He smiled.
We took off our packs and Dan and I wondered how that would be possible whilst James chatted blithely to X about climbing scaffolding and being arrested by German police on his last trip.
'You should meet Jacqueline,' James told X, going on to describe her and her story. X looked interested and told us that he would come with us tomorrow to meet her before leaving for they mysterious sounding Eastern Seas. We didn't ask him what one did at the Eastern Seas.
