Misc Apple Crumble RecipeHits 115213 | Created 2007-05-15 | Modified 2008-01-04The classic dessert that they forced me to learn in Home Economics class at school. It remains unchanged except that I now make my own apple sauce, rather than buying it. ![]() [The butter makes this unsuitable for vegans, but you can substitute a spread you can bake with] Prep time: 20 mins. Cooking: 40 mins. Crumble: 8 oz Plain white flour 4 oz Butter 2 oz Sugar Pinch Salt 1. Sift flour into large bowl with the salt, add the butter and rub with fingers until well mixed and crumbly. 2. Add the sugar and rub a little to mix it in. Apple Sauce: 4 or 5 Large apples Sploosh of Water (half a cup perhaps) Some Sugar 1/4 tsp Cinnamon Sauce Method: 1. Peel and core the apples. 2. Chop into chunks and put into a pan with the water and sugar (sugar by taste, perhaps around a tablespoon). 3. Add the cinnamon and any other spices you desire (nutmeg, cloves, etc) 4. Bring to the boil, then lower, cover and simmer on low heat for about 20 mins, or half an hour. 5. When the sauce is gloopy taste it and add more sugar if desired. If too liquidy, cook with cover off until reduced slightly. If it gets too thick, add more water. Pudding Method: 1. In a greased (with butter) oven-proof bowl, put the apple sauce. 2. Sprinkle the crumble on top and press down lightly with the back of a fork. 3. Sprinkle with a little sugar on top. 4. Place in oven at about 180oC (350oF) for about 20 to 30 minutes, or until slightly golden on top. There are two schools of thought on crumble - to press or not to press? Some people like to compress the crumble mix on top harshly, which makes a more solid topping. Some people like to leave it loose and not press at all. I'm of the middle school, and press a little bit, but not too much. Best served with custard. Hits | Last Modified 2007-12-10 "Who wants 'gloopy' apple in a dessert?" Ummmm.... Me? It's not a smooth sauce - it has solid apple chunks, but it is certainly gloopy - as it should be! Comment Apple Crumble Recipe comment by luke

Hits | Last Modified 2009-09-13 I love food and esp. apple crumble, but don't like spending ages (1 hour+) preparing it, only for it to be eaten in under 5mins when shared between 4 people. I tried making apple crumble earlier today with my mum (not this recipe) and wasn't happy with it. After reading this page, I think I probably added too much butter. If/when I try crumble again, i'm going to 100% follow the recipe here. Comment Apple Crumble Recipe comment by Bry

Hits | Last Modified 2010-01-13 No, no, no! Shop-bought sauce at school economics? What school was this? Our cookery lessons in the 50's taught us to slice the applies and layer in a greased dish with sugar, cinnamon or nutmeg and raisins. We cooked everything from scratch - shepherds pie, soups, cornish pasties (our own shortcrust pastry), biscuits, cakes......oooh you girls! smack ya bum bum! Hits | Last Modified 2010-07-06 Not sure what the readers who think the sauce is a sauce are talking about, but Im with this recipe!!! Just how mum, nan and school taught us in not a sauce persay maybe that was the wrong word to use but when using PROPER cooking apples in an orginal recipe you have to reduce them in a pan to get rid of the sour taste cooking apples have and thats what this recipe is based on. Slice apples is for Apple Pie...... Comment Apple Crumble Recipe comment by eunice barnes
